Ok, so chalk is really not that yummy, but apparently Harper thinks it is!
That little stinker! She's at the age where everything looks appetizing therefore, Mom is constantly fishing random particles out of Harper's mouth. I remember when Gabe was a baby and I saw something black in his mouth. I went in to scoop it out and it was a dead, dried up spider! It was so nasty!! It's amazing how we survive childhood!
I had bought the kids some chalk last week and we had some fun drawing on the back steps. Here's my creation! Do you like it? It's amazing how much fun we all had sitting outside on a warm day drawing with chalk. It really took me back to my childhood and reminded me of how much I miss being a carefree kid. Don't get me wrong, I love being a mom and an adult, but I think adults forget so easily what it's like to get down to a child's level of thinking and playing and forget the innocence a child possesses. I've noticed that as I've gotten older, my imagination has been watered down. I find it harder to come up with creative and fun games for my kids to play sans toys. I blame it on the harsh realities of life that you come to realize as you grow older, but this shouldn't be an excuse for losing an imagination. Toys saturate our kids' lives, especially electronic ones, and the loss of a great imagination seems to impact a child younger and younger these days.
Growing up my sisters and I were really close with my cousins. There was about six of us that were all about the same age and we used to play dress up for hours. We always used the same pretend names - Amy, Beth, Ingrid the maid, a few others I don't remember and I was Drummin. Yes, Drummin. I have no clue where I got that name from - maybe my great imagination! We had so much fun with a cheap, simple box of clothes probably purchased from Goodwill. The point is, we used our imagination with what little we had and we ran with it and had the best time in our lives!
My goal for this summer is get in tune with my inner child and bring out the imaginations within myself and my kids. Bubbles could be sending kisses up to heaven for loved ones lost. Play hide and seek. Pudding paint outside in our swimming suits - if you haven't done this yet, I will blog about this soon! Follow the leader. I'm going to keep a running list so when someone says "I'm bored!" I will be prepared with a list of fun, cheap and creative things to do.
We have to be an example to our kids by putting our own electronic devices down and spending quality time with them. Let me know what you are going to be doing to increase the imagination in yourself and your children this summer! I look forward to hearing your ideas!
